A significant update to WhatsApp has been released that enables communication even when the internet is out.

Through the use of proxy servers, the new technology enables users to avoid the kinds of internet shutdowns or blocks that are imposed by some countries.

According to WhatsApp, the capability was introduced in reaction to a wave of worldwide shutdowns, including one in Iran. The business claimed in its release that these limitations “deny people’s human rights and cut people off from seeking needed help.”

The business expressed the wish that “these internet shutdowns never occur” in 2023. However, IBM made the decision to include the feature “in case these shutdowns continue,” it said.

Users can input the name of a proxy server and use it to connect to the internet by doing so in WhatsApp’s built-in settings.

When conventional connection methods and servers have been disabled or shut down, proxy servers act as an alternative gateway between a user and the internet, establishing the necessary connection between the user and the website or service they desire to access.

WhatsApp said that numerous proxies have been established by volunteers and organizations all across the world to enable people to “communicate freely,” and the firm will also provide instructions on how to do so.

Every user of the most recent version of the app should now be able to access the functionality through the settings menu, according to WhatsApp.

According to a blog post by WhatsApp, “connecting via proxy retains the same high level of privacy and security that WhatsApp delivers.”

“End-to-end encryption will continue to protect your private communications, ensuring that they remain between you and the recipient and are invisible to anyone in the middle, including proxy servers, WhatsApp, or Meta.

“Our wish for 2023 is that these internet shutdowns never occur.

“Disruptions like we’ve seen in Iran for months on end deny people’s human rights and cut people off from receiving urgent help.

“Though in case these shutdowns continue, we hope this solution helps people wherever there is a need for secure and reliable communication.”
