At its next World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 6, Apple is expected to make a number of hardware and software announcements.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. Cupertino time (1 p.m. ET) and will be broadcast live on both Apple’s Event page and YouTube.

The event is set to begin with a keynote by Apple CEO Tim Cook, followed by talks by various Apple executives and team leaders showing the company’s new products and services, as it does every year.

Apple announced iOS 15, iPadOS 15, macOS Monterey, watchOS 8, and tvOS 15 at WWDC 2021, each with intriguing new features and improvements over prior editions. ‘iCloud+,’ a premium subscription tier for iCloud that combines paid storage with privacy features like ‘Hide My Email,’ was also revealed.

Apple also announced a few small modifications to its App Store Review Guidelines and the availability of the Screen Time API to third-party developers at the event. Unlike prior years, however, no major hardware announcements were made at the event.

The highlight of WWDC 2022, like it is every year, will be the announcement of iOS 16, which will be accessible for iPhone 7 and newer. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new software will bring substantial changes to how notifications are handled, as well as improvements to Focus Mode.

New health and fitness features are also planned in iOS 16, as well as the long-rumored car-crash detection tool, which is supposed to work similarly to the present fall detection feature.

Apple is also said to be bringing an always-on display to the iPhone 13 series with iOS 16, but it’s unclear whether this will happen immediately or will be reserved for the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro, which are expected to debut with a variable refresh rate that drops to 1Hz. Finally, in the run-up to the company’s planned mixed reality headset, there are reports concerning new AR/VR features as well as updates to the ARKit framework.

Expected Software And Hardware Announcements

Apple is likely to release iPadOS 16, macOS 13, watchOS 9, and tvOS 16 at WWDC 2022, in addition to iOS 16. Starting with the iPad operating system, most of the main features of iOS 16 should be retained, with minor modifications and changes to accommodate larger screen sizes.

Apple is also rumored to be working on bringing Xcode, Logic Pro, and Final Cut Pro to its tablets, so it’ll be fascinating to see whether that happens this year with iPadOS 16.

In terms of macOS 13, there’s growing pressure from Mac users for Apple’s desktop operating system to have Universal Control, so it’ll be fascinating to see if that happens this year. Apple may also bring the iOS App Library to replace Launchpad, as well as the ability to create Time Machine backups directly to iCloud.

As Apple prepares to offer more IoT devices in the future, the final software-related announcement that could be made at WWDC 2022 is the rebranding of HomePodOS to homeOS.

In terms of hardware, reports say that Apple will unveil a new 27-inch Intel-powered iMac Pro at the event to replace the discontinued model. The M-series CPUs and other new technology might also be used to modernize the outdated Intel-powered Mac mini and Mac Pro.

Apple’s reported mini-LED monitor could also make an appearance at the event, though new sources claim it has been pushed back until October. It will be fascinating to see if the M2-powered MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are introduced at WWDC or Apple’s dedicated hardware presentation later this year.
