In a landmark deal, Microsoft has announced that it will acquire Activision Blizzard, the gaming giant behind popular franchises such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Overwatch. The deal, valued at $68.7 billion, is the largest acquisition in the history of the gaming industry and will significantly expand Microsoft’s portfolio of games and studios.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a statement that the acquisition is part of the company’s vision to “empower everyone to play and create anywhere”. He added that Activision Blizzard’s “iconic franchises and massive player network” will complement Microsoft’s existing gaming offerings, such as Xbox, Game Pass, and Azure.
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said that joining Microsoft will enable the company to “accelerate our growth and advance our leadership position in interactive entertainment”. He also said that Activision Blizzard will continue to operate independently and retain its creative culture and vision.
The deal is expected to close in fiscal year 2023, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. Microsoft said that it plans to make Activision Blizzard’s games available on Game Pass as soon as possible after the deal closes. The company also said that it will uphold its commitments to PC and console gaming, as well as support cross-play and cross-progression across platforms.
