WhatsApp has released its 3D avatars globally for its users. It can be used as a profile photo and custom stickers. The feature was first released on Meta’s other social networking platforms, Instagram and Facebook Messenger a month ago.

The avatars were beta tested in June to work out some of the bugs. Users can use personalized avatars or choose from the 36 custom stickers reflecting various emotions and actions. The avatar stickers are similar to Snap’s Bitmoji and Apple’s Memoji stickers. WhatsApp is looking to add advanced features like lighting, shading, and hair texture in future versions to improve how users can personalize their avatars.

Users will be able to create their avatars once the feature is rolled out by going through the settings. You will get the “Use Avatar” option in the profile photo settings which allows users to make their avatars in the image.

In 2019, Meta introduced these stickers to Facebook Messenger in some selected markets. It was made available in the US in 2020 and came to Instagram this late January. At the moment, your WhatsApp avatar can’t be used on Instagram and Facebook and vice versa. To use the avatar for your WhatsApp profile, you must create a new one.
