Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in cutting-edge technologies. The ChatGPT chatbot, the newest creation from San Francisco-based OpenAI, went up for free public testing on Nov. 30. A chatbot is a piece of software created to mimic human-like conversation in response to user input.

According to Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, over a million users had attempted to make ChatGPT talk within a week of its release.

WHO OWNS OPENAI AND IS ELON MUSK INVOLVED?

Sam Altman of Silicon Valley and billionaire Elon Musk established the nonprofit research and development company OpenAI in 2015, and it has since received funding from a number of other sources, including venture capitalist Peter Thiel. In order to accept outside investment, the group established a related for-profit entity in 2019.

Musk left the board of OpenAI in 2018, but he still offered his opinion on the viral phenomenon, calling it “scary good.” Musk is still preoccupied with his overhaul of the social networking company Twitter.

Musk announced in a later tweet that he was stopping OpenAI’s use of Twitter’s database after finding out that the company was using it to “train” the program.

HOW OPENAI WORKS

In the early stages of development, human AI trainers simulated conversations between a user and an AI assistant for the model. The bot’s public testing version makes an effort to comprehend user questions and provides in-depth responses that are written in a conversational format to resemble human-written text.

WHAT COULD IT BE USED FOR?

Real-world uses for a tool like ChatGPT include online content creation, customer service, digital marketing, and even code debugging, as some users have discovered.

The bot can mimic human speech patterns and can answer a wide variety of questions.

IS IT AN ISSUE?

ChatGPT is not without its critics, as is the case with many AI-driven innovations. OpenAI has acknowledged that the tool has a propensity to give “plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers,” a problem it believes will be difficult to resolve.

AI technology has the potential to reinforce racial, gender, and cultural biases in society. Amazon.com (AMZN.O) and Google, both owned by Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL.O), have previously admitted that some of their AI-related projects were “ethically dicey” and had drawbacks. Humans had to intervene at several companies to repair AI damage.

Despite these issues, AI research is still appealing. According to data from PitchBook, a Seattle-based company that tracks financings, venture capital investment in AI development and operations companies increased last year to nearly $13 billion, and $6 billion had poured in through October this year.
