Apple unveiled four new iPhones, a new Apple Watch, the ninth-generation iPad, and the sixth-generation iPad mini on Tuesday. On Wednesday, I dug out some under-reported items as part of my weekly Things Nobody Told You column.
To be honest, you may have seen some of them by now, but I’m hoping that in this expanded version of what was in AppleUnboxed, there may still be some hidden gems.
There are three Apple Watch nuggets among the eight iPhone products.
What you missed at the keynote
The Apple event was jam-packed with information. Here’s a smattering of topics that were either not announced on stage or were drowned out by the din.
- Cinematic mode is dog-friendly
As well as other creatures and items. In addition to people, you may produce the same bokeh effect in video with your dog or another animal. That’s really cool.
2. The new MagSafe Wallet works with Find My
More than that, it’s intelligent to wait. There is a lag before the iPhone notifies you that the wallet is no longer linked to the iPhone. After all, you could just be fidgeting with it to get a card out, for example.
3. The cameras on the iPhone Pro and Pro Max look identical
Last year, the Max’s snappers were significantly larger than those on the iPhone 12 Pro, but they appear to be the same this year. The cameras in the iPhone 13 are also substantially larger than those on the iPhone 12. The key point is that all of this year’s iPhones feature fairly large cameras.
4. No, you still can’t see the battery percentage onscreen, darn it.
You may have heard that the extra screen real estate on the new iPhones—including the iPhone 13 Pro Max—was not used to display the battery percentage onscreen. No, you still have to swipe down from the upper right corner to see it.
True, I’m so used to doing it that it’s practically natural, but I’d enjoy it if it was back on the screen. Some have stated that an iOS upgrade will fix the problem, but based on my research, I don’t believe this is in Apple’s plans.
5. The macro camera goes plenty close
You can get as close as 2cm, or less than an inch, so you can get really, extremely close.
The Pro iPhones, of course, feature a larger telephoto zoom, which is 3x instead of 2x on the iPhone 12 Pro and 2.5x on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
6. The Pro cameras have identical functions as well as looks
Whereas last year’s Pro iPhones differed in terms of photographic capability as well as design, this year’s models are identical.
7. No, last year’s cases won’t fit
You’d assume that because the latest phones are so similar in size, last year’s cases would fit, but they don’t. The first is due to the fact that the camera panels are different sizes, and the second is due to the fact that some of the buttons are in slightly different locations.
To be honest, this isn’t as big of a concern as it may appear because the amount of individuals who replace their iPhones every year is small.
8. Not all iPhone 13 Pro models are the same
In particular, ProRes, the superior video codec that will be available on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. However, not all of them have the same characteristics. Because ProRes takes up a lot of storage space, Apple has decided that you’ll need a Pro iPhone with 256GB of storage or more to shoot ProRes at 4K 30 frames per second. As a result, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max with 128GB of storage will only support 1080p 30fps video.
