Spotify is closing its live audio app. The company plans to integrate the key features from the live audio app experiment into the main streaming app. For Spotify Live, the time is up for it.
Spotify Live is being taken down after a couple of years of experimentation. The company plans to look towards bringing the fan interactions on the live audio app into the main streaming app. With years under Spotify Live’s belt and never having a grasp on the live audio market, it doesn’t make sense anymore for Spotify for it to be a standalone app. Lessons learned gave a focus on creator-fan interactions as the direction to be looked at. There has been promising with the “listening parties” hosted on Spotify. The information was made public through TechCrunch.
The biggest change in Live came in April 2022 when it was rebranded from Spotify Greenroom. Some features of Live were moved to the main app. Spotify Live’s biggest plus came from fan interactions. This is something that isn’t yet available on the main app but it’s made up for with the 406 million global listeners the main app has. Live had features that gave creators the ability to host and interact. Live had a focus on live sports events.
In December, Spotify scaled back on some of its weekly live audio content. It ended with a host of audio shows. It was due to Live not claiming the market. This was something Spotify hoped for its success with how podcasts are doing well on the platform, live audio seemed like the next chapter.
It is noted that Spotify isn’t the only company pulling back from the live audio game. Last year Facebook integrated its live audio rooms something that was a clone of Clubhouse. They added it to the Facebook Live experience. The social media giant also stopped its short-form audio Soundbites feature and its Audio hub.
