The tech giants have been in a bit of a bind since they were put to the sword by the EU. Over the years, Apple has been under pressure from both consumers and various organizations to move to a USB – C connection for the iPhones, iPads, and Mac devices.
The European Union this month voted for legislation to make sure phone makers switch their connectors to USB – C. For their competitors, this is not a problem but Apple’s insistence on being different comes to a halt on this issue. This mandate comes as part of the EU’s policies to reduce e-waste.
Apple introduced the “Lightning Cable” a decade ago and it has been the connector of choice for all its devices; iPhones, iPads, and Air Pods. In recent years, there has release USB – C version of the iPad but it hasn’t been extended to the rest of the devices. The company on Tuesday told the media they will comply with the EU’s ruling on the USB – C cable but made it clear it’s not happy about the decision. The ruling has come to affect around 2024.
This may not be the last time we hear of this as other international organizations are following suit. The US made steps to follow suit with the EU’s ruling in June. Brazil and India are among other countries considering the move to a common connect rule.
